    TOO short James!

Sassy was grooming Stewie as a possible successor. But he got the boot for an intemperate outburst in P+D while Sassy was still on her summer leave from Gov.

When she got back she apparently didn't think that any of the then current mods were good enough to fill her shoes. So in October she plucked Mark (Beretta) out of almost nowhere and made him a gmod. When I saw the announcement I thought it was a joke or that it was the result of a hacking attack like one the previous June. But Jorge said it was legit and I just groaned.

James was doing an excellent job as a Communities mod and everybody (including James) thought that he would be the next gmod. So there was an almost spontaneous outburst of disbelief and even revulsion at the appointment. There was the usual Countdown drama -- but on steroids, though it was the Great Britain + Ireland diary which became a hotbed of anti-Beretta activity. People associated with that diary exhibited the numbers 286 and 287 in their sigs. I still have no idea what they mean exactly but they were a mark of opposition to Beretta. Things eventually came to a head when Ben, Sassy's docile fellow active admin at the time, closed down an especially incendiary thread in the GB+I diary. The demoddings took place at roughly the same time. After a short spell to make it look like there was no connection, James was appointed a gmod and things settled down.

As for Beretta, he was demoted to mod about 2+ months after Sassy left at the end of 2006. James' mentioning the camming is not what I heard. He may be confusing Beretta with some other former senior staffer.
Through non-mod lounge chatter I heard that Beretta had been on IM with a still active user and that he gave a link containing child porn to this user who reported it. That banning took place in June 2007.

That was like 2 years ago now though, wasn't it?

All I remember from it was him getting demodded for showing naked pictures (or videos maybe?) of himself. I think I had heard that they were taken in various public bathrooms too. But he left after he was demodded and I don't believe he was ever banned.

Pretty much. Ben decided not to ban him, but to obviously remove him from the staff. Then he left and hasn't come back.

Nope I'm here. Apparently people think that when I went on that group camping trip with Ricky, Rob, and Steve that a huge orgy or something happened, but really none of that went down. Also I've been blamed for apparently trying to cover up the whole thing with him giving pictures away because he told me about it before he told anyone else on the upper staff, but really that's not true either because I told him to go to Ben, which he did.

    So yeah, that's that.

Ben was on his way out at the time. That was within a few short weeks of the retirement of him and pretender.

It should be mentioned that Rob (ThnksFrThMmrs) was a gmod.

For some reason an above average percentage of onetime gmods go bad.
Alaska (Serenity.) was banned for pretending to be black and starting threads which were about fabricated incidents of racism and sexual assault. And we already mentioned Beretta.
And while he never got in major trouble, CARNAGE was only marginally active starting 5.5 months after he was appointed. After early June 2006 he'd disappear for months at a time. It seemed he would miraculously materialize in very short spurts whenever pretender needed some blowhard to back him up.

Before anybody complains, let me point out that James was a gmod for only 2.5 months.

I wrote a history of GovTeen with links to pages that then did not exist "crawled" by the Internet Archive (Internet Archive: Wayback Machine) project about 8 or 9 years ago, I believe in the Old Timers forum.

The IA then had a massive amount of pages stores from the old VirtualKid, which existed from 1998 to 2000. http://www.virtualkid.com is now a "placeholder" site, and the owners have a robots.txt file on it - which means the pages from the old VirtualKid are no longer visible at the Internet Archive. However, some of the pages that were on GovTeen Forums - Home are.

The couple who founded VirtualKid - "Sam (Alexander) and Carol" - posted threads to a variety of USENET newsgroups announcing the new site beginning in July 1998. For those of you who do not know what USENET newsgroups are, they are basically what people used as "forums" before web-based "forums sites" like this one existed. The USENET network still exists, although it is now mainly utilized to transfer large "Warez" files. For more information on USENET newsgroups, see Usenet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .

Google Groups has archived all newsgroup postings since 1980, so Alexander's original posts are there. Here are some:

New Teen Web Page -- check it out!! - alt.romance.teen | Google Groups
New Teen Web Page & Teen Search Engine- Come See Us! - alt.teens | Google Groups
Teen Web Page & Search Engine (NOT XXX) - alt.teens | Google Groups

Somebody once flagged one of the early announcements of the site as spam, and here is the response:

WE DID NOT INTEND TO SPAM by www.VirtualKid.com - alt.animals.dolphins | Google Groups

As is apparent from the posts, VirtualKid was a teen-oriented site which featured contributions from teen writers and a teen search engine, and which appeared to debut in July 1998.

Forums were implemented around September 1998.

Puberty 101 was a separate project started by "J. Geoff Malta, MA, EdM, NCC", a psychologist-turned-web designer, gangster movie fan, and ham radio operator, in 1996 (or even earlier). It absorbed itself into VirtualKid soon after its founding in October 1998 or prior. On his "Me, Myself, & I" page, he wrote "Please, call me Geoff (like "Jeff" with a fancy spelling) -- let's keep this informal and fun! I'm thirty years old, and remember my adolescence like yesterday. You'll probably hear some of the things I went through myself as this forum grows. It wasn't all peachy for me, either -- but there were fun times, too! "

I joined VirtualKid around April 2000, when I was 13 under the screen name "jakes13". The site occupied a very large part of my internet activity (and when I wasn't at school, you can bet I was online!) that summer (by then it was known as "Govteen"), and I visited it occasionally until the original site closed. I was one of the original members of VirtualTeen and a very early member of Govteen in its present incarnation. I've went by the screen names of "jakes15", "Innocence Pt. 2", "Soundshift", "zephyr_1998", and finally, "Sprachbund". I more or less stopped using the site as I began my university studies in 2006.

A reminder that we're just over a month away from the 10th anniversary of this version of Gov.
While the internet has its origins in 1969, the worldwide web as it now exists didn't become a mass consumer medium until about 1995. In that context Gov (and its two predecessors) was something of a pioneer.
