So my freshman year for college i have to stay on campus in a dorm. I am trying to decide if i should get a single dorm or a 2 person dorm where obviously ill have a roommate. I was looking at a single dorm room in a community style living. I think I rather have that because then I do not have to worry about splitting anything, sharing crap, having stuff stolen, or getting stuck with someone who hates me or who I end up hating. I have heard a lot of different things about dorms. I have heard somethings where its good. You have someone you can work with, some say its a way to meet new ppl, your roommate may end up being ur closest friend. which is good for me because i will be far from home and will not know anyone there. but i have also heard its really annoying to have a roommate. also ppl have said that it is extremely uncommon to even be friends with your roommate. I am confused on what to do because sum have also said that by not having the dorm life/sharing with a roommate, then id miss out on a fun huge college experience. but i just dont really knoww!! I think I want my own room in the community style buildings. any suggestions, or advice? I mean, i will make friends and meet people other ways besides "living up the dorm life by sharing with a roommate"
advice? opinions? suggestions? Thankss.. I also just want to add in, im also kinda in between about this because i recently did a camp over the summer at a college and i had to share a dorm room with this major idiot who was annoying and full of himself which is my major pet peeve but by the end of the 1 week camp he was alright and we got along well. i still talk to him and everything. so its like idkk. i hear so many different things! i dont know if i am really missing out on anything by not having a roommate or if it will make a difference because ill have many other ways of meeting new people.

2 person dorm is a good experience. makes you realize how much you like having a room to yourself. I had both good and bad experiences. my first room mate was gay which caused a whole lot of unrelated problems but me and my second room mate became the best of friends. don't miss an opportunity to meet new people.

I've always had singles, except this year where I have a 3 room double. I've liked it. On the other hand, many of my acquaintances are and have been great friends with their roommates. It really varies.

If I told you my dorming story my freshman year, you'd never want to share a room with anyone ever again. And you'd probably want to go wash your hands.... for 5 hours in 95degree Bleach.
But I had probably the worst dorming experience, and it was an anomaly to say the least.

It's a really long story - it's elsewhere on the board...just not sure where.
Anyway, I absolutely love dorm life. I had an interesting experience Freshman year with my roommate's girlfriend thinking she owned the room - but had I not had this experience, I would not have learned as much as I have by living in the dorms. I've really grown as a person and have learned to deal with people who are very different from me. I think living with a roommate is a good idea, generally, as in the least, it should give you someone to spend time with and maybe meet friends with.

I'd personally recommend having a roommate. Hopefully the college you go to will have a good system in place to match people with combatible roommates--i.e. based upon schedules, music habits, personality, etc. You certainly take a risk in having a roommate--you may love the person or you may hate them, but most people find themselves somewhere inbetween. Keep in mind that if you do have a roommate, you can always switch to another room after a term if things simply don't work out.

share a room, being social in college is huge and can never be understated. you dont need to worry about sharing anything if you just go "yeah id rather just buy my own stuff" and why would you ever worry about things being stolen? if something is legit stolen all you have to do is contact a RA and it will get solved immediately

Roomate, no question. Not having a roomate, especially freshman year, kills your social life. Trust me, I know - the roomate of a friend of my roomate was expelled my freshman, and my roomate kinda went behind my back to move in with his friend. He asked the housing dept. not to tell me until basically the day he was going to move (actually really annoyed me that the housing dept. went along with that, because it was against college policy), so I had no backup plan, and ended up going the rest of the year without a roomate. He didn't have anything against me, just wanted to be with his friend (he was from the area and knew a number of people at the school), but the effect on me was pretty drastic. Your social life goes down the drain, or at the very least it makes it much more difficult, and with the classes you will have the last thing you need is to have to divert effort away from them to sustain your social life. The rewards of landing a good roomate are far greater than the risk of landing a jerk. And you can always try and switch - just do the guy a favor and tell him

Having a roommate was annoying as hell at times, but I definitely wouldn't change it for anything. It's an instant friend on the first day, someone you can go with and do all the thousand and one things you need to get done before classes. You don't have to be best friends with them, the best room mates are those that you simply are ok with, because it avoids conflict.
I'm definitely a calmer, more relaxed, tolerate, and mature person for having dealt with sharing a room with someone.
