Anything like this for me is very far off, but the more you know, eh? Anyways, I guess the most advantageous thing about being gay is a zero chance of pregnancy, but I've heard that anal sex can be dangerous too. What should me and my partner do to make sure that we are as safe as possible?

Well, it sounds trivial but make sure you don't hurt each other haha. Use a condom NO MATTER WHAT. The anus is very unsterile and who knows what you can catch from that.

Dont just shove it in either. Make sure you communicate, and go at a pace which is suitable for the person receiving. Dont be afraid of going quite slowly, and make sure plenty of lube is used.

Proper lube as well, not some improvised soap or something crazy.
Go in real slow, yeah, and let him get used to it for a moment or two. Then start slowly, and if you want speed up, but not too much. Remember, it's meant to be erotic for both of you, so listen to him all the time.

I think he was saying that one of the two partners would have to have HIV/AIDS - STD's cannot just appear out of thin air.

lol i meant that the anus apparently bleeds during anal sex and thus it becomes easier to get HIV in the bloodstream. of course, this only happens when one of the people has AIDS

My take:

First off you have to be prepared; condoms are a must-have. Regardless of who is going to "top" you need to have condoms with you. You don't want to get into a situation where you get there, all hot and bothered, and he doesn't have any condoms. That's the kind of situation where you can say, "fuck it!" and make bad decisions. I don't know your two's sexual histories and you may not know his. Yeah, it sucks but better safe than sorry.

Lube! You will need lube. I'm loathe to tell you what you should use for lube(with the exception of oil-based lubes which destroy condoms.) However, since I don't know sexual histories, I wouldn't recommend that you use spit. Personally, I'm a big fan of spit but it can possibly carry herpes and such so lets not go there. Get a good water based lube(Wet, KY, Astroglide, etc.) Use plenty but don't go overboard. Reapply when it starts to feel dry or you could literally rub yourself raw regardless of which party you are. Remember that even with lube you could still rub yourself raw.

Go slow! Sex isn't a race. This is especially true when you're first trying to get it in. What position you use is up to you but I would recommend one where the bottom is able to somewhat control what is going on so that they can stop if it starts to hurt. Communicate with your partner and let them know if it hurts and/or you want to stop. There's no shame in asking for a second and having them back off. Once you get it in you may want to give a couple seconds to get used to it if it is your first time having sex. It can be an unusual feeling and, depending on the guy's size, can be a bit...interesting. Take your time.

During continue to communicate with your partner. If the top is bigger than average him thrusting in deep/fast/hard could cause pain in my experience. Don't be afraid to say if any particular thing hurts so that it doesn't happen again. Sex isn't something that should be endured.

Afterward clean up. If either partner notices any blood they shouldn't ignore it. Odds are, if there is any, it is from the sphincter and that just means not enough lube was used. That's really not a big issue and will be fine in a day or two.
