Fashion Designer?

I have a huge circle of friends who's main passion and desire is to become fashion designers. But, I don't know how to help them accomplish that goal. So, does anyone know any information on how would it be like to get into the fashion industry or make it into it or so? Or what they should try to learn to be prepared for it all?
