Default Ignorant people

Philosophy class. We're discussing homosexuality. Some of the arguments that I heard were outrageous. I couldn't respond because I would be instantly marked and my life would be extremely difficult, which would be something I currently don't need.

It's not a disease. It's not a choice. It's not hurting you.

I hate philosophy. The amount of narrow and closed minded individuals that take it is too much. I'm the only religious person in my class, this means that every time there's a debate about God, I can either leave everyone to start going off on anti-religious tangents, or I can give my opinion and either get ignored (even by the teacher) or turn everyone (including the teacher) against me. The amount of people who are homophobes in college (as well as anti-religious people (I don't say athiests, because not all athiests will try and rip you apart for believing in something) is also deterring me from partaking in any arguments to do with that topic too.

Sexuality as a whole is a touchy subject, with most people going against it. Unfortunately, the only way to get stuff through to people is by voicing your opinions, but that usually leads to do getting insulted and even beaten up/beaten to death by people around you. It's a never-ending circle of hatred, and until there are more people backing us, everyone that voices their opinion will be shouted down and their life will be ruined.

Philosophy begins in taking stock of public opinion. It does not stay there, and if it does it's merely public opinion. It's very hard to get good discourse going in lower level classes, and I hope that the bad experience doesn't put you off philosophy altogether.

Philosophy is quite interesting and it's nice to think for a change. While I'm unable to hold even a mildly intelligent conversation with one of my peers, my professor is good and I enjoy talking to her.

Remember that most people are not good for intelligent conversation (otherwise it would be called conversation).

I just try not to take philosophy class too seriously. The world won't be altered by the fact that I've won or lost an argument with a complete stranger, so I don't let it bother me.

It's not that that bothers people, it's how many prejudiced people take those classes and how you're practically bullied into not giving your opinion because you're the only one there who believes it's right. If I win an argument on religion with someone in my philosophy class, it's a huge thing, until they all start making snide remarks about you because of your beliefs and opinions.

How do you win an argument about religion?

I think the main issue with homosexuality is that people believe what they grew up knowing/hearing... No matter how stupid. Homophobes make my life so fun because I'm not out yet. A lot of guys will get into a conversation with me and they're like "I'm such a homophobe... I can't even get near a gay dude." And then I'm dying of laughter in my head as he pats me on the shoulder and says "Later dude!"

People just don't understand homosexuality so they reject it as a disease, or a choice or something like that... I also think that it is human nature to reject things that we don't understand. I guess that's why I reject homophobes; I don't understand them...

And that's what I don't let bother me. On some issues you'll have 100 people on your side, and on some issues you'll have 100 against you. It's something that can't be helped. It's a shame that life works that way, but sometimes you just have to keep your mouth closed.
