Default What makes a fruit a fruit?

Alright sorry if there has already been a thread on this I couldn't find it.

Ok so like that tittle says what makes a fruit a fruit?

chilli's, tomatoes, and cucumbers etc. have seeds so does that make them a fruit? If so why are they called vegetables?

So what are your thoughts?

Chili peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers are considered fruits, not vegetables, for the exact reason you stated. You may have heard them called vegetables simply because it's a common misconception that everything that is sweet is a fruit and anything else is a vegetable.

As opposed to the biological distinction detailed by other posters above, there is a culinary definition of fruit that treats usually sweet plant products as fruits and non-sweet plant products as vegetables. This is where your confusion comes from.

I say that if it contains seeds, it is a fruit.

This. I can't think of a single "vegetable" that has seeds (because more than likely there aren't any).
