Mount Diablo remains Mount Diablo. Period.
In his fight to cleanse Mount Diablo of its evil name, Oakley resident Arthur Mijares went before the Contra Costa County board of supervisors Tuesday to explain why the peak should be named after former president Ronald Reagan.
He expressed his disgust over the "diablo," which means "devil" in Spanish. "To me and millions of other followers of the Christian faith, the devil is derogatory, pejorative, offensive, obscene, blasphemous and profane," said Mijares, who was recently appointed to the county's Alcohol & Other Drugs Advisory Board this month.
A Concord man also suggested another moniker for Mt. Diablo -- Mount John Muir -- at which point, we imagine, the supervisors groaned, rolled their eyes and slapped their foreheads. They ultimately rejected both requests, voting to send a letter of opposition to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
Supervisor Mary Piepho told the Contra Costa Times that the board can now turn its attention to more pressing issues. "We have our hands full with deep budget cuts and losing local services. Let's put an end to this discussion and get on to more important items."
