Those red cups

Why, in all American movies and media, at house parties, is everyone drinking from big red cups?

Don't you guys have bottled alcohol/if drinking spirits have glasses?

I just don't understand how these red cups can be so prevalent and visible to an outsider from Australia.

Plus, at a lot of those parties they have kegs so you need cups.

It's fairly common at extremely large parties in university for someone to buy a keg or two (the party is then referred to as "a kegger").

You generally pay admission to the party and that gets you a cup (like 5$-10$. Sometimes they'll charge less for girls, since having more girls there means that more boys will come, plus girls don't usually drink that much beer). The cup lets you drink from the keg keg for the night.

Depends.

Kegs are expensive and it helps to have a lot of people coming to the party to chip in to fill the keg and to rent a tap for it.

I know when I turn 21 first thing I'm buying is a keg.
