Default People are depressed for a reason.

I really hate how society these days makes you think that if you're sad or suicidal, then there must be something wrong with you. Or if someone is horribly depressed and wants to commit suicide, then everyone assumes they must have a broken brain and need a bottle of pills to fix them.

Ever think that maybe there really isn't anything wrong with them, and that they might actually have a good reason for wanting to die?

I dunno, maybe the reason your sad isn't because you've got a broken brain. Sure, that's a possibility, but ever think that it might have something to do with your unhappy marriage, or someone in your life abusing you, or your crappy job, or that the bank has taken your house away and you're now homeless, or that you failed at raising your kids, or that you suffer from chronic and severe physical pain, or that your heart has recently been shattered?

Maybe the reason you're depressed/suicidal is because your life really does suck.

No, I'm not trying to say that in a lot of cases depression and thoughts of suicide aren't triggered by mental illness and chemical imbalances in your brain, because is not true. I'm just saying, before you decide that there's something wrong with you and you need a bottle of happy pills, maybe you should take a look at your life right now and see if there's a good reason why you feel so awful about yourself.

People are gravely ignorant of mental health issues. The old cliche of "only the week suffer from mental health problems" is still pedalled around.

I think that being depressed and taking "happy pills" as you put it, is something of a fad right now.

ah good ol' rants against "society". Teenagers often get depressed because their hormones are going out of control. That's why people maintain that not all "depressed" teenagers are clinically depressed. Often you can just ride through it, its not that tough - I did it. Being a teenager sucks ass, and once you get past it things usually get better.

If you want to die, your brain is malfunctioning, because no living creature wants to commit suicide 'naturally'. And what's wrong with taking pills to try and make the person less sad/suicidal?

    Question

Default Re: People are depressed for a reason.

I think people are too quick to blame their mental problems on other people, and want a doctor to give them a prescription for some medication they don't need, because they think it'll improve their life. I think if those people would just analyze what they're truly upset about, and work on the situations at hand, and ask for help when they need it, they won't need to blame all their shit on other people.

I use myself for an example... I've been through quite a bit of shit... I'm always involved in something, one way or another. I don't live a good life at all, living about a half-step from poverty, working two jobs to keep food on the table for my siblings, yet, I'm decently happy. People depress themselves over the smallest little things, and feel like they can never be happy, because some douchebag with a doctorate's degree told them they wouldn't be, without taking some god-knows medication that no one can pronounce.

It's all a bunch of bullshit, and people are too quick to jump the gun. Now, yes, some people ARE fucked up in the head, but the two lines of having mental issues, and just having a day where you couldn't get your fucking Starbucks latte are two totally different things, that people seem to cross lately.

My mum is like that, I suffer with depression so my mum thinks the only solution is for me to be on pills, she thinks all my problems will just go away just like that. Makes me sooo angry.

Count yourself lucky that you have never been in a position where wanting to die is the lesser of two evils.

I agree with that, wholeheartedly. Those times happen, and they help remind me that I can get through them. It's either get through them, or escape the problem all together, which works too, I've come to realize.

E.g. you have a terminal disease that's causing you a LOT of pain and suffering, and all you have to look forward to is it getting worse.

I totally understand this, me being someone who used to be in a depression. The pills I got assigned didn't do shit, and at first I thought I was sick or "broken" but in the end I really wasn't. I finally delt with some of my major issues, and I made some changes and I instantly became happier. I didn't really need the medications. I didn't have a chemical embalance or anything like that; some aspects of my life actually sucked.

Wow, now that I think about it, everyone thought I was "sick", when I really wasn't. I feel like people sort of need to stop looking at depression as a mental illness and start looking at it as a reaction to some external occurance. I know depression can be cause by being "broken", but sometimes something causes you to "break". Wow, I rambled just a bit...

    Agreed.

Some people arent lucky enough to have a rosy, fantastic life. Or even an average life where people say "FML" over stupid little things. Some people have lives which are almost intolerable to live through, and i know from experience that some days you wake up and just really dont want the day, after day, after day of mental torture to carry on.
