One of my best friends in the world (at least I thought she was) seems like she may be suicidal.

All of her status updates on Facebook have read "Life sucks...", "I just want it all to end", "Just kill me", "Nothing ever goes right for me", and a lot more negative things. People discuss it with her, and she defends herself and comes up with reasons that support the negative things she says. She is also dating a guy who treats her like shit just for the sex.

She just started college, so could it be stress from that?
If not, what can I do to help her? I try talking to her, but she turns away and finds more things wrong with herself to make it worse.

I'm just worried and don't want her to do anything extreme.

You can worry, but based on what you're telling me I doubt she's suicidal at the moment. She's a college freshman who, according to you, is in a horrible relationship. She's going to be stressed, and she's going to say scary things.

If she's posting these kind of messages on something like facebook, it seems like more of an attempt to grab attention to me. Not saying that it's a bad thing, she just may be looking for reassurance and support right now.

However, if you notice a sudden change in her personality, confront her. If she suddenly starts trying to get her affairs in order, major mood swings, or suddenly seems "OK" and calm about everything then I'd recommend that you get help.
