    Penguin Intertubez Issuez!

Okay , I'm A Gamer , So Right Then And There I Need To Have Nice Intertubez. XD. My Ping Is Ridiculously High , Even For Server Connections Near My Home >_>.

Basically It's High , I Have No Prob With That, But My Ping Will Randomly Change. Not A Few Points . I'm Talking 20-30 Pts... There Is Absolutely No Pattern And Please Don't Tell Me To Phone ISP... Telus's Tech Support Fails... 1: It's Outsourced To Mumbai, And 2 It's Obviously Being Read Out Of A Manual, These People Are Nothing But Checklists Being Payed Minimum Wage...

Ive Tryed A Program Called Process Explorer , MSCONFIG Etc. But Nothing Has Improved It...

And The Most Irritating Issue Of All...

Is That Sporadicly And Randomly My Internet Will Freeze Up.. It's Laag So Extreme That The Computer Says Its Dissconnected, Like I Said There Is No Pattern (High traffic, Interference etc.)

My Theory For THis Is That , Occasionally More Than One Thing Connected To My Modem/Router Will Attempt To Use The Exact Same IP And THese two devices (eg mac and pc, or itouch and a laptop etc.) will just plainly lock up

I notice if i reset my modem this issue resolves... And My Reasoning For THis Is that when the modem resets it will give out new ips basicly... the modem resolves the issue for the devices...

MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I RESOLVE THESE TWO THINGS, ID LOVE GOVTEEN IF I COULD FIGURE THIS OUT!!!!

For fuck's sake, don't capitalize every word. Did nobody teach you how to write properly?

To determine whether or not it's your router, connect directly to the modem and see if the same thing occurs. If so, you'll need to deal with Telus.

So, because it varies by 20-30 MILLISECONDS, you're freaking out?
    Dude.
When you're playing a game, said game is both receiving and sending data, using up bandwidth, which in turn will cause your ping to go higher.
A 20-30 ms variance is to be expected.

If you /really/ care that much, setup QOS (Quality of service) for your network, and set your computer to get the priority for bandwidth. For it to work properly, you probably will also need to have DHCP setup.

SEE HOW ANNOYING IT IS WHEN PEOPLE WRITE IN CAPITALS.....ON THE INTERNET IT MEANS YOU'RE YELLING. And you can't spell like.

If there are multiple things trying to get the same IP address, try creating a static IP address on each computer/console etc...

what game do you play? online, pings are usually high when you're playing in a server connecting from a different country, and also other programmes running in the background.

Ok, everybody cut the shit. Typing Like This Is Fucking Annoying whether you think it is or not.

A 20 - 30 ms ping lag every now and again is fairly normal. It might not even have anything to do with your connection, it could be to do with the server, or the routers in between the server and you. As someone else mentioned, something else might be using your connection at that time also. How high does it go though? Is it less than say 200 the whole time?

I would say anything below 30ms Ping is fairly normal. My ping is over 50ms right now and I am not experiencing any kind if difficulty. As every one has mentioned there may be other factors, Wireless connection quality if you use wireless, your telephone line quality, your internal house wiring, your internet load(other people using your internet, downloading, updates) and your router config. All I can say is it cannot be anything to do with an IP. It may even be a gaming server issue, I've been on games countless of times and its lagged on their end due to a high amount of people on the servers. I will pin point some one is downloading on your internet. Whenever you reset your router, the persons connection to the download is lost therefore their download stops giving you a fast connection to the server.

50ms is normal for DSL. Cable is about the same. Satelite internet gets up to 500ms+ easily. Judging a your ping return rate to some third party server isn't really correct anyway. In fact, your ping time will vary based on various things:

    a) How close you are to what you're pinging (in terms of both distance and in terms of network. You could be right next door, but both be on different ISPs. Thus you'd have a higher ping time because your packets would have to navigate through your ISPs infrastructure, through their network and back again)

    b) Network congestion - either within your network, their network, or the network in between

    c) The type of connection you have AND the type of connection they have.

    d) CPU or ethernet congestion on the server - a properly configured server can help stop this, although nothing is perfect.
