Default Are my concerns about my last physical legitimate?

DISCLAIMER! By posting all this info I am hoping that all that info doesn't get me banned as I tried not to be graphic but still be informative as I feel the below info is important to answer my question.

For all you family guy lovers thats a quote you should all know. But anyways....

I had posted a year or so ago that on random occasions after I urinate I leak blood. Well I told my doctor and he sent me to a urologist. Now this office and profession must be catered to an "older" audience because all I seen there were older men in their 60's+. So needless to say, I REALLY must be a "special" case. But I digress....

The urologist first asked me to give him a urine sample and sent me to the bathroom with a cup to do that. Then I got back and he told me to take a seat and started asking me a bunch of questions (are you sexually active, do you masturbate (he needed to know if there was blood in my semen too)....). Then he asked me to pull down my pants and my boxers and lay down on my back on the doctors bed / table thing. I asked him why and he said hes just following standard procedure for a visit like this.

Well basically he gave my a physical, but with a weird twist...

He felt around in my scrotum for tumors and put his hand right above my groin and asked me to cough to check for a hernia and then the weird part.

He grabbed my penis and pulled it to its extent and looked at the underside I guess. No doctor has ever done this before, not even MY doctor who referred me to this guy. All my doctor does for physicals is tell me to pull open my boxers with my finger then he puts his two fingers on my groin area and asks me to cough, thats it. But this guy did that and MORE.

But anyways, as if that wasn't weird enough here is where the title comes in.

After this he asked me to stand up with my pants still down and asked me to bend over with my arms on the table and I asked him why and he said he needed to check my prostate and I said but I am not like 50 or anything, doesnt this usually happen when your older? And he said that he didn't want to play russian roulette by "guessing" that I don't have certain problems. I basically complied because he has the doctors license, not me but said the whole time "I dont like this, this is terrible" and he said "just rest, the more you fight me the worse this will be" and well, he gave me a prostate exam.

Now that I have gotten all that out of the way did the doctor step too far?

I mean, Im not 60 years old why do I need a prostate exam?!?! And further more what is with that whole penis tugging thing? And why did he give me a physical in the first place! My doctor who referred me to this guy had already given me one and sent my urine to a lab to look for cancer and it came back negative, but this guy insisted on checking my COMPLETELY for tumors.

I feel violated, like thats the kind of thing men about to turn 50 dread and I had it done already!! The only positive thing I can get out of this is that I can now say "I survived a prostate exam. I can do anything".

After that whole ordeal he wants to send the urine sample I gave him to a lab to do a papsmear like thing on the urine cells and found blood in the sample too. And he wants to send me to get a iodine-ink-in-my-veins-test-with-a-catscan-too.

So really, doctors or someone who knows something about this stuff, did the doctor overstep his boundries and really have to do that ULTRA-MEGA-DETAILED physical? Oh and when he asked me if I masturbated, could have not have also asked if my "nocturnal emissions" had blood in them? Either way, semen is semen!

I'm not a medical professional, so take this as you will.

The way I'm going to look at it is that he was being cautious and checking everything possible. I don't think there was a problem with the prostate exam, it is possible to have problems before you're 50. I don't know about the whole tugging thing, but I'm guessing he was trying to see more of the scrotum.

As for the "nocturnal emissions" question, some people have never had a wet dream, myself being one of them; masturbation is a healthy activity, and he is a licensed medical professional, it's not like masturbation is a discussion he hasn't had before.

Honestly, I don't think he was overstepping his bounds, just being cautious and taking all possibilities into account. That's just my opinion...

well that part is completely normal as he needed to rule out STD's and other things of that sort of nature plus most times you go in for something like that they will go ahead and give you a full physical just to check and make sure you dont have tumors causing the bleeding (I'm not sure if thats possible but I wouldn't worry about a physical)

He grabbed my penis and pulled it to its extent and looked at the underside I guess. No doctor has ever done this before, not even MY doctor who referred me to this guy. now this is the only part im not sure about maybe he was checking for a rash or something.

Prostate exams are not just for people 50+ and he needed to check if you prostate was having swelling or anything like that.

Now that I have gotten all that out of the way did the doctor step too far?
it sounds all standard to me

He was basically covering all his bases he had to find out what was causing you to urinate blood and it just so happened that checking your prostate falls under the category of covering all his bases. In fact i would say he is a good doctor for going ahead and checking everything because if he didn't and there turned out to be something wrong with your prostate it would look bad on his part.

In short your doctor did not go too far he acted in a semi-professional manner (he could have explained things better to you) i don't think you have anything to worry about. Prostate exams are uncommon for young aged people but they aren't unheard of especially in your case.

What he was doing is called his job. He is a urologist. You had a problem that required a specialist, and you got one. Of course the examination a family doctor and a urologist perform will be different. In the case of a family doctor, they do a complete workup whereas a specialist generally focuses on the problem at hand. Your family doctor's duty is to maintain your overall well-being, whereas a specialist's duty is to diagnose and treat problems in the area of his or her specialty. All of the urologists actions can be explained. He was doing his job and trying to help you. Guessing is something a doctor cannot do; it opens them up to too much liability and risk. Before they give a diagnosis, they need to perform tests to confirm their findings. The doctor was just doing that.

You feel violated - OK, understandable. But the doctor was completely in the right and your anger is misplaced.

Seriously you're 17, grow up, he was doing his job. Like people have said, specialists are there for a reason, they go into more detail, GP are just filters.

The title of this thread is dodgey and should be changed.

To answer your two main questions, he is a urologist that is his specialty. He gave u a much more detailed physical than ur regular doctor because he specifically specializes in that area of the the body, hence why your doctor sent you to him. The semen part was definitely legitimate because he is trying to determine where the blood is coming from and urine and semen travel from two different places but they do cross paths at some. Also, the stretching of your penis and looking at the underside he was probably looking for any irregularities as that is the path fluids take to exit the urethra. As far as the prostate exam it was also legitimate. My friend had to get one when he was 12. If there is an issue like that the prostate is part of that organ system therefore it needs to be ruled out. As embarrassing and humiliating as it was he gave u a proper exam.

There is nothing unusual here, just that your urologist did a poor job of explaining what he was doing to a patient clearly expressing skepticism.

The first procedure is a standard uro check. It's to check that nothing feels off. I know that seems like a vague description, but it's one spot that can identify a lot of problem conditions.

Prostate problems are rare in young men, but not unheard of. With your presenting issue, it was a reasonable check for your urologist to perform. But, again, he should have explained this adequately.

Sounds like he's just doing his job, but you can certainly consult another urologist for a second opinion!
Only another specialist will know for sure if this doctor overstepped his boundries.

    Not necro posting, but updating.....

So after all those tests I went to get a CAT SCAN done and that along with every other test he has done and has come back negative. Now he wants to perform a Cystoscopy. Needless to say I am terrified. I don't really want one because everything else has come back false so why shouldn't this one too! But I don't want to be a fool in case something is wrong. Even though its a 2 minute procedure I don't want re-incurring nightmares later in life about the camera slowly increasing in size from a cytoscope to a webcam, to a digital camera, to a tv studio shoulder cam, to a space satellite... My appoitment is on the 15th of this month and I am dreading it so bad. Like what should happen if for some reason I get an erection while the camera is in my urethra, will it tear or something?!!?!? I need some opinions please, or maybe some feedback from someone who has had this procedure done. Oh and heres an example of the procedure being done on an epsiode of House called: The Softer Side - The scene is 8 minutes in.

I'm sure that either the camera is designed to withstand an erection or you'll be given anti-erection drugs.

As for the procedure, I don't know much about it. You can learn more about it from trustworthy online sources such as WebMD, and you can always ask your doctor questions before the procedure. It doesn't sound like the most fun procedure, but you'll probably look back on it and be glad that it's done with.
