The filter in China is as useful as those you find in your school computers. There are ways to get around.

Hong Kong is an autonomous region like Tibet or Xinjiang, it has its own house of representative and passes its own laws independent of China, it even have its own currency. It is a protectorate in the sense that it doesn't have its own army, although it's not a word we commonly use to describe the relationship.

And even if you don't know how to get around, I found very few sites to be blocked while I was there this summer. The blocklist is constantly changing, but I had solid access to Facebook and the BBC for the month I was there, which in the past were blocked.

A lot of the blocking centers around politically "sensitive" material such as the Tiananmen Square massacre, the negative sides of the cultural revolution, etc.

He knew she was there by the rapture and the terror that seized on his heart. She was standing talking to a lady at the opposite end of the ground. There was apparently nothing striking either in her dress or her attitude. But for Levin she was as easy to find in that crowd as a rose among nettles.... The place where she stood seemed to him a holy shrine, unapproachable, and there was one moment when he was almost retreating, so overwhelmed was he with terror.... He walked down, for a long while avoiding looking at her as at the sun, but seeing her, as one does the sun, without looking."
