Explorer Programs?

Has anyone here ever been involved with one of the many Learning for Life Explorer programs? I am going to a meeting at a local hospital in a few weeks for a presentation on the Health branch of the explorer programs. But I am really confused on how and what goes on in these programs. Specifically, I want to be an EMS explorer, but I don't know if that is part of the Fire branch or the Health branch. Anyway, you may know them best for their Police Explorers programs, so if you have taken a course from them, just tell me what and how it was, and if you have some insight into the way their system works, let me know!

I am a police explorer with my local sheriff's office. How the explorer program would be set up in your situation is really based on how the EMS agency is set up. If it is part of a fire department, then it would be through fire exploring. If it is a stand-alone agency, it may be through health exploring, or, they may have a non Boy Scouts youth program set up, usually called "Junior Corps" or "Youth Corps"

There is a fellow around here who is a police explorer by the name of Casey, and he has a very good thread in his diary which details his day-to-day life in his explorers programme (albeit a police one) at http://forums.govteen.com/showthread.php?t=276063 in the GovTradition Diary.

Also, I think Ricky, one of the Diary Moderators, is in a type of programme which you describe above, and he might also be a good resource person for you. His counterpart in the Diary section Illumintus (sp?) and Ben, the Administrator, are fire fighters to my knowledge, and they might also be good sources of information.

I think there is at least one person around here who was in a EMT/fire department explorer programme, and his username is Natatanta (sp?): http://forums.govteen.com/member.php?u=65521 There was another thread somewhere in this section with a person who was asking a similar question as you, and I am going to try to find it as I vaguely remember posting some information in there, too.

I've already PM-ed you about it, but if you really want to get to play with the EMS people in real life stuff, join a CERT team. As a member, you are specifically responsible to assist emergency responders in real disasters. The teams are all under the direct supervision of the local police or fire dept...

You know, you have raised a really good point, and in light of the current threats facing the country along with the problems raised by the Katrina debacle I know a lot of town are bringing back their ESDA (Emergency Service Disaster Agency) programmes which kind of have roots in the civil defense brigades of the 1950s when the USA was concerned about attacks from the USSR. You might want to find out of if your area has an ESDA programme as my understanding is in a lot of areas it is staffed by volunteers. I actually have the same ID badge as my local fire dept gives it's firefighters & EMTs....

I have noticed that ESDA people do often appear in the same gear and uniforms as regular members of the security forces, and my suggestion to the OP is that if working with an ESDA programme is an option, then it can give you a lot of great experience.
