    Default I'm bored, so... cottaging?

Here's some random googled pictures of the Ontario cottage/camping areas I'll be visiting this summer:

    Parry Island, Georgian Bay (cottaging)

    Balsam Lake Provincial Park (camping)

    Contau Lake (cottaging)

    Sundridge, Ontario (cottaging)

    Albion Hills (camping/boyfriend's bike race)

    Kennisis Lake (cottaging)

One of my co-workers said he'd never heard people taking off for the cottage every weekend (which surprises me, because growing up, many of my friends spent most of the summer at the cottage, and this guy only grew up a few hours from me).

Anyways, anyone else doing any cottaging this summer?

I am too busy with work and other things to be going away every weekend. Although I would desperately love too!

I will be going to my cottage for the long weekend next weekend, which I am soooo looking forward to.

We were torn between going actual camping or to the cottage. But we're after a nice getaway, not something where we have to work to get things done haha

I'm wearing myself a little thin with all the weekend getaways. From last weekend until September, the only weekend I am actually at home is the August long weekend. I'm betting that I will be thorougly exhausted by the time September rolls around.

Your lake looks awesome. The last two pictures especially are very beautiful.

I'm in major camping withdrawal since moving out two years ago... I used to go all the time, but the lack of a car and busy work schedule in the summer have sucked the camping out of my life.

The nicest place I remember as a kid was Halfway Lake by Sudbury.

I go up to my parents cottage about once a month. They live up there over the summer. Was going to go up yesterday, but my "boyfriend" was too shy to meet the folks.

Halfway is pretty decent. I went there last summer with a couple friends..the only shitty thing is a tornado ripped through the grounds a few years ago so an entire section is pretty much desert like with no trees or shrubs, just sand.

I'm pretty much the opposite. My family doesn't own a cottage, nor did many of my childhood friends' families, and as a kid our summer holidays usually consisted of going to visit my Babi in Montreal. It wasn't until I started University, when my friends were old enough to have a weekend or sans parental supervision at the cottage and invite up a bunch of friends that I had so much opportunity to spend in cottage country.

Last year when I went to Haliburton with Dan's family it was right after a huge storm ripped through the area and took down a bunch of trees and stuff. The damage in some areas looked so devastating, I can't imagine the devastation of a tornado going through.

Do most people in Canada have their own cottages then?

    No. But a good number.

Keep in mind, it's not an overall "Canada" thing. There are many areas, that are simply too far a drive away from cottage country for it to be worth it to own a cottage. One of my co-workers grew up about 2 1/2 hours away from where I did, but that would make his drive to the cottage 4+ hours, when it would take people in my area only 2.

Also, even though Ontario has a lot of nice lakes, an increasing number of the cottages are owned by Americans.

I agree a lot of Americans are buying cottages here. I live in a nice place, and here you can find places bought by Americans as a cottage.

Urm 'cottaging' is slang in Britian and has a very different meaning which often involves public toilets....

I don't think its an overall Canadian thing as Jen said...but where I live, about 80-90% of people have a cottage or access to one.
