Default What degree's would I need to get into media?

    *Ads Disappear After 100 Posts*
I'm currently in Year 9 at school & every so often we get carrers periods. They basically consist of going on the computers & using some carrers software which isn't very accurate.

When I'm older I'd like to go into the media (preferably radio) & I was wondering what degrees I would need in both College & Uni.

I know media studies & journalism would be the way to go but would that be it or would I need something else? Also what GCSE's/A Levels would I need to get into the classes?

    Thanks.

You don't generally need to do specific GCSEs to get into a class (with the exception of additional science [or the relevant course such as biology, chemistry or physics] if you want to do A-level chemistry, biology or physics) so you're safe with anything.

It also depends on your school and which classes they require you to have done to take a class at A-level.

Plus it wouldn't hurt to go a local radio station for your year 11 work experience.

Plus you could also do Media Studies for GCSE, which could help you.. that is if your school does that course.

Nowadays most jobs are being snapped up by people with experience, that is the most crucial. At A level, English is going to benefit you (especially language) as it will give you a broader understanding of the language; and enable you to speak/spell more fluently.

At university a degree such as Journalism + (whatever you fancy) would be what I would recommend. Also, as they mentioned before me; get some work experience. Your career advisor or your head of year/tutor should be able to assist you with this - although it might be worth waiting until you finish your GCSE's and get a longer Summer break with which to complete this.

That said, it is going to be your degree with which you are judged (normally) so make sure you explore all the options. Email your local radio stations and ask what they look for in prospective employees etc.

    Cheers.

Journalism degrees to me are up there with media, kinda a false hope. An English language degree will stand you in better stance with regards to the media industry, atleast thats what i have been told.

As for GCSEs it really doesn't matter, aslong as you get all the core subjects in, maths, enlgihs, sciences, a language or two they won't really care. A levels the only advice i would give that i wasn't is try and pick atleast 2 traditional subjects that you will complete to A2. If you are aiming high as in top universities than 3 or 4 traditional subjects is an almost must.

I'd say definately go for an English Language Degree over Journalism or Media. After you have completed your degree in English Language (Or something similar), you can do a postgrad degree in Journalism if you really want to. Doing the two gives you a higher level of degree and also more time to build experience in work placements.

I think it's a little early for you to be thinking of degree courses, but at least you know what you want to do. As people have said, try to build experience, email radio stations/newspapers to see if you can do some additional work experience over the next few years.

GCSES/A Levels in English are a plus, although not really generally required, maybe do an English degree and then others you think you'd enjoy.

Getting a degree in media studies or journalism is one way to ensure that you never get a job within the media. Go with English (Literature) and then do postgrad in journalism.

Does journalism do better as a degree for American students looking to enter the media? I've not talked to many on the matter, as I myself study philosophy and look forward to no easy career.

I'm not sure, but here there's an attitude that if it isn't a science, language, or traditional academic subject (english, history, law etc) then it isn't worth the paper it's printed on, and that includes journalism. You'd probably have a better outlook her, because I think arts and social sciences are better respected here.

Thats the impression I get anyway, I'm not claiming to be an authority on this.

I don't mean to bump (and it's not too bad) but this isn't true. Having spoken to countless employers in the media; they are all looking for people with English skills who know how to implement them in a practical sense. There is leagues of difference between being able to write an English essay and being able to write a news story/present news articles on the radio.

I'm a firm believer that to get an instant in into a media career you need a journalism/media degree - if you wanted to do something else, before going into this, then an English degree might be a better option.

    Cheers.
