Default What purpose does the president serve?

I had a sort of flight-of-fancy epiphone today. What is the point of the president? Why should one man have so much power, it makes absolutely no sense.

Read Article II of our Constitution. And Epiphones are hideous.

The US is the only republic I think who doesn't have a Prime Minister*

(Excludes Africa, as sadly they are not democratic republics )

I hear the train a comin'
    It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine
    since I don't know when,
    I'm stuck in Folsom prison
    and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin'
    on down to San Antone..

The President is the head of the executive, which is an incredibly important branch in the government. Without it, nothing gets done.

He's the third part of the system, obviously.

The Legislature makes the law and the President (and his branch) carries out the law. (The Judiciary checks both branches). Having no president would be like running a company with no CEO.

Also when it comes down to it, the president only has power because we (the people) give it to him. The president can do little without the consent of Congress.

    Haha, I noticed that too.

But hey, they're not that bad, the Masterbilt acoustics are pretty darned solid and if one wants a decent Les Paul, they're cheap and are still pretty good.

I didn't literally mean what role does the president play, I know that. And I understand why people thought having a president was a good idea at the time. But I don't see a single positive thing about giving one person that much power.

He doesn't have that much power when you actually look into the checks and balance system of our government...

I don't understand how giving one person any more power than another in the federal government is a good idea.

So.. Not to hijack this thread or anything, but what does a PM do? I know in British government, the Queen is sort of a figure head, the PM has the power, and Parliament passes laws like our Congress, or do I have that wrong?

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.
The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.
There ya go, not that hard.
Silence, unbeliever!! Our weapons are fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the pope, and nice red uniforms.... Oh, bloody hell.

That system would never work, you need leadership in every social group.

Head of State- Represents our nation in ceremonial roles
    Chief Executive- Heads Exec. Branch
Chief Legislator- Various Checks and Balances imposed by Constitution
    Chief Diplomat- Directs Foreign Policy
Party Leader- Party Expects him to lead it
    Commander-in-Chief- Commander of Armed Forces
    Economic Planner- Prepares Budget yearly

They do do alot and I dont think they get enough credit because Bush is kinda busy all the time!
