    Default Computer RAM

    *Ads Disappear After 100 Posts*
My Computer ( desktop ) has 768MB of RAM, which is on 2 RAM Sticks. I know a computer shop that will give me $5.00 credit for each, so if I were to trade those in and get just one 1GB RAM stick, would that be a big upgrade from 768MB. I know its a 232MB Upgrade, but how much better/faster will my computer be. It already runs pretty quick, but If I can make it go faster why not.

1GB RAM should improve performance, although performance also depends on other stuff such as a processor speed graphics card etc. It depends what stuff you want to do with your PC really.

1 ram stick of 1GB is slower than 3 ram sticks (if you could just buy a 256 MB upgrade)

I disagree, i think theres a time when you can have more than enough ram, to the point that you have extra ram that your system isn't using, and that even when you are running applications you still aren't using. You can only have 4GB max on a 32bit operating system. For someone who uses a computer to check email, listen to music, surf the web, watch video's, etc, anything over 2GB is excessive.

If you have the money, 2 1GB sticks is better than going with just one. Or, two 512MB. Multiple sticks are better than just one.

But bear in mind, what was said earlier about proc speed and video card memory as well, all play into it.

It might be a better idea if you have more than 2 RAM Slots in your computer, to just buy another stick or two of 512, or something.

    Pfft. Don't make me think.

I just woke up from a nap when I posted that.

I was thinking about it only being one stick, and you can't have a 768MB RAM Stick.

I'm thinking I shouldn't post at certain times like that. This is the 2nd or 3rd time I've done something like this after that.

    Evidence deleted.

its better to have 2 sticks so that the work is spread out instead of putting all the work on 1 stick.

As people above have said, its faster to have multiple RAM sticks. The reason being the computer can access the two RAM sticks in parallel rather than access the one at any one given time.

It would be cheaper for now just to get the 256mb upgrade and proberly faster as well.

Yup, dual channel matched pairs with low timings and fast speed.

It depends opn multiple factors. Ignoring CPU, and graphics.
U would need to compare ram speed. Also check the max speed your mb supports. if there are more ram spots then ur better off buying 256 mb. Since a tri ram set up beats a single 1 gb set up
