That's not as hard of a discussion to have as you'd think. Just say what it really is, that it's something to cover up when it happens but it's not his fault, and that he'll understand it more when he's older. He'll find out eventually from someone, though, depending on how old he is.

tell him its his dick and that right now its hard but it wont hurt him or anything, but that he should put his pants on or else you will go tell on him for running around. And also maybe not ask mommy or daddy...

"Every now and then, a boy's penis grows and becomes hard. And after awhile, it becomes softer and goes back to normal." You can tell him it's an errection if you like, but that's all he needs to know.

Otherwise explain it as best as you can in very simple terms but I really suggest exaplaing that it's not something he should go showing around like a trophy.
