    Default Driving without a permit?

    *Ads Disappear After 100 Posts*
I'm 14 and live in California. I want to learn how to drive and my dad says he will take me to an empty parking lot to teach me but my mom says its illegal to do that without a permit. Do you think it's illegal to drive without a permit in an empty parking lot with an adult in the car? And even if it is do you think its a bad idea? Thanks.

In the US, you can do it on private property...I'm not 100% sure about Canada though.

Hmmm... I drove with my Uncle in an empty parking lot without a permit or license. I doubt that if a cop stopped you he would give you a ticket or anything.

I've done that countless times in a church parking lot but it is on non-busy neighborhood street so no cops were near by.

A cop cannot issue a ticket for driving without a license on private property, unless someone reported you. Of course, it would be a good idea to have an adult with you, naturally.

Unless you're on your property you run the risk of getting a ticket. Typically, unless you're doing donuts or something, a cop won't bother you. So, I would do it. I have before a mall.

Unless you look incredibly young to be learning how to drive, a cop that sees you with a parent would assume their teaching you, and you should be fine unless your doing something that would warrant getting pulled over.

If you do get caught, you could be ineligible to get your license until you're 18, or the cop just might give you and your parents a warning.

if you live in a smaller town/city.. and if there arent many people around the parkinglot and stuff.. it probably wont be a big deal..

although if you do it on your own property.. then it wont be illegal or anything.

can you not get a permit at age 14 in california?

If a cop does happen to see you and stop you in that parking lot, he may give you a warning because he would realize that you're trying to learn to drive in a safe place, where you will not endanger other people. But it would depend on the cop.

But yes, driving without a permit is illegal. And if you do drive on the roads without a permit and you get caught by the cops, you won't be able to get your permit until you turn 18 or 21 or some age that's a couple years after you are supposed to. That's what it is here in Pennsylvania.

Meh in the UK i took my friend down to an empty carpark for a business park, and let him drive around. I dont know if we were allowed in the carpark, but also to be in the car with a learner you have to be at least 21 years old, and have had a licence for at least 3 years.

    No police around though

First of all, you don't even have a permit to begin with so I advise you to avoid doing it at all costs.

I have driven without a permit. On private property, mind you. And I have driven for 200 mile trips before realising "Oh shit, the permit's in my dad's car!"

Thankfully I've never been caught. Again, i wouldn't approve of doing so .

Technically, it's illegal to drive without a permit. I suppose it's a legal gray area if you're on private property and have permission from the owner.

Practically, it's no big deal. Almost everyone I know (names witheld to protect the guilty) got a little practice in a parking lot before getting their permit. As long as you have a parent with you, I don't see any reason for the police to pull you over and ask to see your permit (it's very difficult to break traffic laws in an empty parking lot).
