Americans calling the groundfloor the 'first floor'....seriously....it's on the ground....
I'm not havin a go, I'm just confused.

I mean, it's on the ground, the first floor is the first floor above the ground..............:S

The long answer: When you are standing on the "ground" floor, is that not the "first" floor of the building? Thus when you go up one flight of stairs, you reach the second floor of that building. So, our way is more logical. One could say "first story" and "second story" (and still be technically accurate) but that isn't too common here.

The short answer: We are Americans and we do what ever the hell we want to. ;)

I always say the first floor if it's a house. But if it's like a block of flats I'll say ground floor.

Oh deary me; (first it's storey, but never mind, would I quibble?)
It's not more logical because in terms of the structure of the building the first floor is the first artificially created level of internal structure.
The ground is the ground; what's more logical than calling it by its name?

the apartment building i lived in last year had a "ground" floor, then a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor. it always seemed strange to me that i was on the "2nd" floor, and there were two levels below me.

the reason its retarded to call it the "ground" floor (regardless of that its on the ground)...is because "ground" IS NOT A NUMBER. :D

you don't count: ground, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc. :bleh:

that, and i'm going to second justin's assertion of "we are americans and we do whatever the hell we want to. ;)"

Why not have - Ground Floor, 2nd Floor, 3rd Floor etc?

We have ground floor (for the people on the ground) and then numbers so the person on the second has only one underneath. And no 1st, which seems to cause a lot of contention here.

I always laugh at how <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place> has taken the middle ground on everything involving English.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

The majority of people around here say first floor when we're talking about a house, and ground floor for just about any other building. However it tends to be ground floor, second floor, third floor et cetera.

i consider the basement the "ground" floor because it's actually in the ground. 1st is above the ground floor!:P

Wouldn't the floor that in the ground be the basement? :P

First, Second, Third floors and Ground, Second, Third floors makes sense. However, Ground, First, Second, Third, does not make sense.

I'll tell you what makes no sense.. A debate on the semantics of floor naming schemes :)

Ground Floor ------------------------------------------- where lobby is / main entrance from roads

Both First and Ground floor make sense; it would really depend on the building. If the building had say 2 floors of basement underneath the floor you enter into from the street than calling it the ground floor makes more sense as people could (and they will) get confused as to which floor they exit from if the street floor was called the 3rd floor
