Every one keeps on telling me that the government is going to change the legal driving age to 18 does anyone know anything about this....I hope its not true:(

I have heard the same rumor... but it will not change the accident rate or anything like that. We have to start driving one day. One day or another we will start driving. This will not change anything. They should just leave it be.

I am glad that I already have my license. I don't have to worry about that. I don't think they should change it. The reason why there are so many accidents among 16 year olds are because they are just learning to drive. You have to learn sometime...

It's already the law in California, I wouldn't be amazed if other states are implementing similar laws.

"The government" is an ambiguous term. Driving laws (Elizabeth Dole's bullying excluded) are the exclusive prerogative of the individual states. Bush certainly has nothing to do with it.
In any case, the general theme I've noticed across the country is a movement toward graduated licences, usually with full driving privileges granted by age 17 or a certain period after turning 16, usually 6 months).

Id support this, imho most 16 year olds arent mature enough to get behind the wheel and drive

I believe California is still giving out licenses to 16 year olds (I know a few people who just got their license within the past 2 weeks).
Anyways, I don't think the issue is with age, but with the training and experience the person has before they get their license. I think requiring more drivers ed/training and more time behind the wheel experience before issuing the license would be better, with restrictions for the first couple of years as they have in California now.

Very good Objectivist you seem to be one of the few people around here that knows the diffrence between the state and fed gov. What many states will do is to have graduate drivers license like said before.

In my country, the age for driving has always been 18. I find it odd that in most states, people responsible enough to drive are not yet considered responsible enough to drink.

i don't know of anything like this in florida because the requirements have already been changed recently. in florida you can get a restricted license (learning permit if you will) in which you must drive with someone at least 21 years old at 15, but regardless of what age you get it, you must hold it for 12 months before you are eligible for an operator's license. my brother got his permit after being 16 and still had to hold it til 17. also, upon taking the driving test for an opporator's license one must have a signature of someone 21 or older certifying that the person has completed i believe 500 hours of driving in this 12 month period.
minors can also get their licenses taken away for poor attendence in school.
...not that it matters to me, i'm about to be 19..hehehe

I get my license in what, 8 months now and i'm excited. If they change it i'm going over to Pres. Bush's house and I will kick him in the shin. If he doesn't start clenching then, i'd poke him with a stick. After that, i'd drive away in my nice 1993 beat up Civic and do a lawn job on 1600 Pennsylvania Av. (I think thats right) then i'd just drive away.
If the driving age is increased to 18, it would not be because of Bush. It is not a law, it is a regulation, set forth not by the president or the congress, but by departments within the government that are not directly dictated by the president.
I don't care if they change it, they're not taking my license away!!!

Also, I believe driving age is dictated at the state level at this time and it is just coincidence that it is 16 everywhere. But I may be wrong.
All driving codes are somewhat forced onto the states by the US Dept of Transportation thru their control of highway funding. Long ago there were actually states that had 18 as the legal drinking age, but the USDOT and MADD forced them to raise it to 21.

It happens in some large cities but it won't go state wide anywhere for a long time tomany people live in the rural parts of america and it almost nessary to have some one to drive when both parents most likely work way off in a city. and also do to the number of famlies with two working parents, and kids that have jobs needing transportation.

I'm so glad I already got my license....
I would have thought that making a decent test before handing out licenses would have more affect.

In Washington, DC you don't get your final license until you're 18. You can get your provisional at 16.5, so the final license doesn't really matter. I don't think people realize that where they're proposing to change the law, it just applies to permanent license.

In Ohio you get your temps at 15.5 and your full at 16, but we have a garuted license law in Ohio. Plus I heard they moved the year you can get your temps to 17 for people born atfter 1989, but I was born in 1989, so I will get my temps af 15.5, while the most of my classmates will have to wait until, they're 17 to get they're temps. :gbounce:

lets just hope our illerate republican government can be rid of in the election of 2004 to bring in some fresh faces with Democrats! IF a DEMOCRAT GETS ELECTED IN 2004, THE DRIVING AGE WILL STAY AT 16.
New York makes you wait till yur 16 to get yur permit unlike florida...i've had my licence for 9 months now and its great...at 17 i can drive afer 9 (i wish i could drive past nine now like michigan)

Here you get your permit at 16 and license at 16.5 (baring you have completed 30 hours of drivers ed class, 6 hours of monitored driving in drivers ed, and 6 hours of drving observation, as well as passing the driving exam, administered by the State Police at the local RMV)
When you get your license, for 6 months you cannot drive with anyone under 18 in your car, and its a 30 day license suspension if you do (first offense). Untill you turn 18 you cannot drive between 12 midnight and 5 AM, but i do anyway and have never been pulled over.
Our licenses are on a step system here, 9 is the lowest step and 42 is the highest. YOu start at a neutral step (15). This is was determins your insurance rate. Basic insurance is $1684 for the year, for every step above 15, it goes up 7%, and for every step below 15 is goes down 7%. Any traffic violations will increase your step as well as accidents.

True, the federal govt. has nothing to do with the driving age. In New York, you get your lerner's permit at 16(must drive w/ parent in passenger seat), then once you've completed the a safety course you can get your license at 16 1/2.

Actually, I do need to spell out every word but that doesn't mean everyone else has to. However, your writing was laughable. This isn't a text message; you have more than 160 characters to say what you need to.

I'm 16 and I live in New Jersey. I'm getting my 6-hours requirement for a permit in a week , then when im 17 I'll get im restricted license (basically the same thing as a basic license but you get a time limit) then when im 18 I'll get my full license.

There is already a thread about this. Go there.
There are two separate threads, both about driving age, in this forum. You shouldn't have closed one because one was about changing the driving age and the other is a question about different states' driving ages.
For me, in the other closed forum, thanks to Yallah, I live in Illinois. You can get your permit at 14 and your license at 16.

In Oregon we can get a permit at 15. When you turn 16 you can get your license, but only if you've had your permit for 6 months and have had either driver's ed and 50 hours of driving with a parent, or, have 100 hours of driving with a parent. For the first 6 months of having your license you can't drive with anyone under 18 in the car, unless it is an immediate relative.

This sucks, it's a matter whether I have to wait another 4 years instead of less than 2 to drive, I am 14. I already know how to drive, I do it in empty parking lots with my dad. Making us wait for 2 more years in really unfair. That's all what a teenager's life is, waiting to get their braces removed, waiting to drive, waiting to be free from the law. The teen years is mostly about waiting for everything, and I hate waiting. I can understand that this would save teenagers their lives, but some of us are good people, the government don't really know us. I know that the teen years is all about waiting because I have 2 sisters who are now adults. I am so pissed that this could happen, I am sick and tired of taking public transportation, I wanna drive!

They better not change it in NH!!! I'm gonna drive when I'm in 10th grade, and I'm in 9th now...if they change it...I'd hate this state even more than I do now. I think changing the age to 18 is highly unlikely.
