Name the movies that you feel are the must-see movies of all time, or the movies that had the most impact on you. If you can, explain what it was about each movie that made you connect with it so much.
My top 5:
Star Wars - this movie was practically my religion as a kid. I loved all the great visuals, the music and of course Han Solo (can't beat Harrison Ford).
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Indiana Jones has to be the coolest screen hero I've ever seen (once again, Harrison Ford), with more great visuals and music.
Gladiator - for the same reason I love the Raiders and Star Wars films - a really cool hero, great visuals, great music and an epic story.
Forest Gump - this has to be one of the best stories of the last decade. I just don't think a movie collection is complete without it.
Good Fellas - being a criminal never looked so fun. Pesci and De Niro make this an unforgettable film.

Donnie Darko - Great cult flick, Jake Gyllenhal did a superb job of acting, and Richard Kelly also did a fantastic job of writing the screenplay

Full Metal Jacket - One hella war movie. 'Bout Vietnam war. Also has a funny as all hell drill sergeant at the beginning, untill he is shot by a recruit

The Crow - Kick ass movie, even better comic book series. Too bad it was Brandon Lee's last appearance, he could have made all the other Crow movies so much better.

Flat Liners - With Kiefer Sutherland(Yes, he beats Harrison Ford =-P), hes a physcho-somatic medical students who convinces a few of his classmates to stop there heart, and go into the world of death to experience it, and the ones that werent dieing at the time revive them back to life

Eye for an Eye - Also starring Kiefer Sutherland, he plays a psycho who kidnaps a womans daughter, rapes her, and kills her. The mother goes out looking for revenge.

24: Season 2 when it comes out will also be a great kick ass collection, even if it is a TV show

Almost Famous: The script is fantastic, and it creates an excellent atmosphere, overall just a sweet, funny, big-hearted, enjoyable movie.

About A Boy: Best romantic comedy ever :P A great script also, Hugh Grant is excellent, charming movie.

Schindler's List: Devastating, filmmaking at its very best.

Cast Away: People seem to hate this movie, but I thought the way Tom Hanks handled such a demanding role deserved an Oscar.

Angela's Ashes: Good use of comic timing keeps it entertaining.

Interesting choices so far... I really need to see Donny Darko ~ I've heard a lot of good things about it. I would add Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to the list of all-time best movies I've seen. Everybody should remember to watch Robert De Niro get the AFI award next month, btw (http://www.usanetwork.com/specials/afideniro/ - on the USA channel, 9pm/8c).. It would be really great if he gets a lot of support that night. When you look at the list of people who have already won, you can see what an honor it is:

1973 - John Ford
1974 - James Cagney
1975 - Orson Welles
1976 - William Wyler
1977 - Bette Davis
1978 - Henry Fonda
1979 - Alfred Hitchcock
1980 - James Stewart
1981 - Fred Astaire
1982 - Frank Capra
1983 - John Huston
1984 - Lillian Gish
1985 - Gene Kelly
1986 - Billy Wilder
1987 - Barbara Stanwyck
1988 - Jack Lemmon
1989 - Gregory Peck
1990 - Sir David Lean
1991 - Kirk Douglas
1992 - Sidney Poitier
1993 - Elizabeth Taylor
1994 - Jack Nicholson
1995 - Steven Spielberg
1996 - Clint Eastwood
1997 - Martin Scorsese
1998 - Robert Wise
1999 - Dustin Hoffman
2000 - Harrison Ford
2001 - Barbra Streisand
2002 - Tom Hanks
2003 - Robert De Niro

It's a Wonderful Life Need i explain the wonder that it is? A classic black and white movie for Christmas Eve.

The Life of Brian I know it's not so good for religion but hell it's funny.

LOTR I couldn't choose which one but they are so beautiful.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I love Ron's facial expressions in this! (books are better though).

It wasn't one of my top 5, but I did enjoy it a lot. I guess it was because it was... real. And it had a good message, it should make some people open their eyes.

yes. to some extent...it is real.

however, i would like to put something out on the table here...

REAL skinheads ARE NOT racist. skinheads are the original rude boys. thus, originating from ska music, and not racism. indeed, they are violent, however...not racist. blah, blah, blah. skinhead culture. . .

R. Lee Ermy, He was a real Drill Seargent. In Full Metal Jacket they had him to show an actor how to act as Drill Seargent. But he was so good that he ended up playing the role himself, and he didn't even use a script.

In no particular order -- and keeping in mind there's a lot of movies I've never seen:

Never Cry Wolf -- underrated film by Disney (you've never heard of it because they've never promoted it -- even the DVD release only contains in very fine print that Walt Disney owns it). Live action movie exploring nature's relationship with man -- often viewed (incorrectly) as an "environmentalist" film.

Perfect Blue -- Wonderful anime suspense feature. Not your typical robots and ninjas anime tale.

Contact -- Just a great movie. You get to see all sorts of classic themes in action in this one.

The Trial (Orson Welles' version) -- orson welles' unsung gem, orson welles said himself that this was his best film. Franz Kafka was the writer of the original novel, and orson welles adds his own particular stamp on it. Produced in 1960's Prague independently after a bitter orson welles had left hollywood disillusioned.

The Shawshank Redemption -- 'nuff said.

I just thought it was an excellently made film that had strong performances and a strong message. And yes it seemed, although I have no experience of american neo nazism or skinheads, real.

REAL skinheads ARE NOT racist. skinheads are the original rude boys. thus, originating from ska music, and not racism. indeed, they are violent, however...not racist. blah, blah, blah. skinhead culture. . .
In the UK the younger followers of neo nazi political groups like the National Front and BNP almost always and have historically seemed to be skinheads. I just assumed it was the same in America.
