i watched this film on DVD today and it was absolutely superb. I really would reccommend it to everyone. Although De Niro is the lead character, Chris Walken blows him away. I've only ever seen him in Sleepy Hollow before this (he was pretty good)but 'the deer hunter' has completely changed my opinion of him, I have so much respect for the man. His performance ranks amongst the best I have ever seen (lead or supporting) in a film and he thoroughly deserved the oscar that he won for it, it really is the most moving and powerful piece of acting i think i have ever seen (especially the bit when de niro goes back to saigon). If you havn't heard of the film before then its about a group of friends whose lives are all changed in different ways by Vietnam. Although it does have some good war footage, the main focus of the film is the realtionships and trials of the group of friends. Everyone should see this film.
The Deer Hunter is one of my favorites of the war genre and really epic in scope but retains an intimacy that's both haunting and evocative.
IMHO it's severely underrated and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Apocolypse Now, and certainly better than Platoon. Because it was made in the 70's shortly after Vietnam the actors have a immediacy that puts u right in that era... it doesn't feel contrived or affected... it feels real.

While I love The Deer Hunter for its intense characters and russian roulette scenes, I just prefer Apocalypse Now...Maybe it's because The Deer Hunter has a very extended prologue.

definitely underrated. i've only seen apocolypse now once before and i think its overrated, the deer hunter is better. A.Now seemed to drag on for ages whereas although the deer hunter is pretty long, its not draining in the same way that A.Now is.
So, what did you guys think of chris walken?

I really dug this movie. I've seen bits and pieces of it for the past few years, but about a year ago, I sat down and watched it. Intense movie. Great. Christopher Walken is fantastic.
